Wine tasting has moved to the Web and videoconferencing! It’s not quite the same as being there, but this is a low-cost way for winemakers to conduct tastings around the country.
msnbc report that California’s Kendall-Jackson wineries have been conducting ‘virtual’ tastings with success:
Wine critics are shipped the bottles to be sampled, then e-mailed tasting notes. If they don’t have a Webcam, the winery sends that along, too. And the winery’s tech people do a test run to make sure it all works.

This reminded me of a wine tasting dinner I was involved in about 10 years ago in Australia. Four sites across the country were linked for a dinner and we had wines from the four major regions on the country. One winemaker from each region was present at each of the videoocnference dinner sites. Each winemaker spoke about his/her wine and dinner guests were asked to identity which red & white on their dinner table belonged to which winemaker. There were hundreds of dinner guests so it was a major undertaking – all going off without a hitch.
So let’s raise a glass to videoconferencing – a technology for all occasions!
