Lorraine contacted me to ask if I know of videoconference software that is very good for low bandwidth connections. Her friend Skipper Rich Wilson, a former teacher, invites students to follow him in the upcoming Vendee Globe, around the world alone race. He needs videoconferencing software to use
on his monohaul which has a low baud rate of 56K.

I didn’t have a good answer – but suggested Skype or Xmeeting (Mac only). Afterwards I wondered about Polycom PVX.

Lorraine came back with this reply:

Rich received follow-up info from the Vendee Globe that Skype, Polycom, and clipway.com are options that work. The one that I use frequently is discovere but the video box on it is very small so it’s not perfect for a videoconference.  It is used more for the whiteboard and audio. We used it in a conference with a researcher in a tent in Ross Island, Antarctica so I know it works on a satellite connection. It’s just a tiny video.

A number of these solutions are free – so you might like to try them out. If you know of videoconferencing at low speeds please share via the comments section.
