Serendipity 2.0: Missing Third Places of Learning
June 14, 2007 | | 1 Comment
I’m at the EDEN conference in Naples, Italy & will post snippets of information. The Plenary session has opened with Teemu Arina, CEO, Dicole Oy, Finland on the topic: Serendipity 2.0: Missing Third Places of Learning
He started his company at age 16 because the education system didn’t support his learning and started his own personal learning space – ironic that this is now the buzzword for education!
Teemu spoke about the ability of education to adapt as always being behind the changes in society. He introduced us to Ray Oldenburg an urban sociologist from Florida who coined the term third place.
He also introduced us to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin a French Jesuit priest trained as a paleontologist and a philosopher.
He also reminded us of the wonderful work of Marshall McLuhan by highlighting several of his ideas:
- Technology as an extension of the body
- We shape our tools & afterwards our tools shape us
This has great meaning at this time because the Internet creates new spaces that didn’t exist before.
Teemu suggested we need a new term for Homo Sapiens & suggested Homo Contextus. This is a connected human whose brain is expanded virtually.
Teemu ended with 4 questions from Marshall McLuhan:
- What does it extend?
- What does it make obsolete?
- What is retrieved?
- What does it reverse into if it’s over-extended?
You can read an overview of his presentation at his blog. I suggest you spend some time on his blog and follow up on his links & the people he reads.
